Can weak ties create social capital? Evidence from Self-Help Groups in rural India

The “strength of weak ties” has been established in the context labour market outcomes, with theoretical and empirical investigation showing how ties lead to an increase mobility job opportunities. impact on community organisation is less well understood. We contribute this literature by investigating if ties, generated via membership livelihood programmes, can creation or enhancement social capital. Based data from one largest independent primary surveys for India, we find that participation self-help groups had little livelihoods, but led significant capital, as measured indicators related personal efficacy collective action. use Entropy Balancing estimate mean effects tackle problem non-random selection into programme. In contrast bulk existing evidence programmes based small samples, our large sample size innovative survey design allow us detect a larger number greater certainty. argue capital programme positive (even though main target strengthen livelihoods), it strengthens process women’s empowerment.
